The gist
Baffle (baffle.games) is a free browser game. We do not sell your information. We do not run ads. We collect only what we need to run the game, keep scores and streaks working, protect the site from abuse, and understand whether the product is improving.
What we store for the game
When you play, we may store:
- An anonymous player ID (in a cookie) so your streak, scores, and history stay with this browser.
- Your guesses, scores, and which objects you played.
- An optional display name if you choose one for the leaderboard or challenges.
- Challenge links you create or respond to.
We do not ask for your email, real name, or payment details to play. If you never set a display name, we only know you as an anonymous player ID.
Cookies
We use cookies (or similar browser storage) to remember your player ID and keep you signed in to your own progress on this device. Without that cookie, each visit would look like a brand-new player. You can clear cookies in your browser settings at any time; your on-device history will stop matching server records until you play again.
Analytics and monitoring
We use third-party tools to understand how the site performs and where people get stuck. These services receive de-identified usage data, not your guesses or museum answers. Providers we use include:
- PostHog for product analytics (events like starting a round or sharing a score). See PostHog's privacy policy.
- New Relic for application performance and error monitoring. See New Relic's privacy policy.
Information that may identify you
The only personal information we routinely process for security and operations is your IP address and browser user agent (the standard technical string your browser sends with each request). We use these to rate-limit abuse, debug errors, and keep the API reliable. We do not use them to build advertising profiles or sell lists.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not use your guesses to train public models for unrelated products.
- We do not require a social login or email to play.
How long we keep data
Gameplay records (scores, guesses, leaderboard entries) are kept so your profile and challenges keep working. We may delete or anonymize old data over time as the service evolves. If you want your player data removed, email us and we will do our best to help.
Children
Baffle is meant for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Links to other sites
Object pages may link out to museum collections. Those sites have their own privacy policies. This policy applies only to baffle.games.
Changes
We may update this policy when we add features or change providers. We will revise the date at the top of this page when we do.
